Oil Lamps, Herodian style

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men..." (Matthew 5:14-16)

"... the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom." (Matthew 25:1)

These lamps were produced for use in Jewish homes, and are precisely the kind of lamps about which Jesus spoke on many occasions.
